Handwriting

At St Helen's we use the ELS phonics mnemonics to help children to learn how to form their letters correctly.

Throughout EYFS and KS1 handwriting is practised daily as part of our phonics learning.

In EYFS, children practice the formation of each individual letter using the ELS mnemonic in non cursive format.

In Year 1, children continue to practice formation of each individual letter using the ELS mnemonic progressing into a cursive style, using lead in lines during the Spring term.

In Year 2, children practise their letter formation in a cursive style, continuing to use the ELS mnemonic adapted with 'lead in' at the beginning. Children should be confident with vertical joins.

Throughout KS2, children continue to practice handwriting weekly, focusing on keeping their letters consistent in size and should be confident in both vertical and horizontal joins.
