Year 1 expectations

Year 1 is an exciting year where your child will build on the skills they have learnt in Reception and start learning new things across reading, writing, maths, and other subjects. Here’s what we focus on:

  • Read regularly at home and at school.

  • Use phonics to sound out new words.

  • Begin to read more confidently and understand what they are reading.

  • Learn different ways to spell and say sounds.

Writing

  • Form letters correctly and write neatly.

  • Use capital letters, full stops, and finger spaces.

  • Write sentences on their own, including stories, letters, and fact files.

  • Start to spell common words and use phonics to help with new words.

Maths

  • Know numbers up to 100 and understand place value.

  • Add and subtract numbers confidently and solve simple problems.

  • Begin learning multiplication, division, fractions, money, and time.

  • Recognise shapes and describe position, direction, and patterns.

Science & Topics

  • Explore plants, animals, materials, and the human body through experiments and observations.

  • Learn about history, geography, and significant people linked to our topics.

Behaviour & Personal Development

  • Listen carefully, follow instructions, and concentrate on learning.

  • Work independently and in groups, showing respect for others.

  • Grow in confidence, curiosity, and resilience.

Supporting Learning at Home

  • Read with your child at least four times a week and record it in their reading diary.

  • Practise spellings regularly.

  • Complete homework tasks sent home on Fridays.
