Phonics

All children in England are expected to be taught the 'building blocks' of reading through phonics. At St Helen's, we follow the Letters and Sounds phonics programme which is split into 5 main teaching 'phases'. This page will be used to share information and resources to help support your child's learning at home.

During Term 1 we will:

-Recap 'Phase 1' - this 'phase' is all about getting children ready to read. It includes activities which develop their listening skills as well as understanding the rhythm of words through songs and rhymes.

-Introduce 'Phase 2' - this 'phase' introduces children to the idea that letters make sounds which build words. We will begin with the letters: s a t p i n

- Children will have daily whole class phonics lessons as well as small group activities with an adult.

-Send home weekly phonics based home learning.
